Leo / J.P. Rhea |
The glyph for the constellation and sign of Leo can be described in several ways. The simplest is to say it is a lion with an arched tail. It has also been described as a sun symbol with a sunbeam or energy radiating from it. Lastly, it has been described as a heart with the life force coming through it. All three descriptions are apt for this astrological sign which is marked by generosity, charm, and optimism, agreed universally to be the "brightest" sign in the Zodiac.
In terms of Maslow's Hierarchy, the Representational Person, having assumed an existence under Aries, fulfilled basic needs under Taurus, taken stock of the world under Gemini, and having settled their feelings about it all under Cancer, is now ready to go forth and make contributions and changes to the world. The key phrase for Leo is "I Will."
People born between July 23rd and August 22nd (Tropical) and August 17th to September 16th (Sidereal) are Leo natives. Leos are sometimes described as the "Egos of the Zodiac," for they are oft-times criticized for grandiosity, self-centeredness, cruelty, and selfishness. There was a reason that The Godfather Don Vito was surnamed "Corleone." Regulus, also called Cor Leonis, the Heart of The Lion, Leo's chief star (Number 26 in the Nautical Almanac), however astrologically moderates Leo with temperance: The Don's phrase was, "I'll reason with him," not, "I'll make him an offer he can't refuse." The latter was Michael Corleone's catchphrase. Leos would much rather purr than roar. Still, their natural role is as "Il Padrino."
Leos, though they may be dramatic and forceful to a fault and sometimes seemingly self-absorbed, are magnanimous and gregarious to an extent greater than any other sign. They like to give. They also like to be thought well of, and more importantly, to think well of themselves. Therefore, Leos are almost never duplicitous. They may be frank and blunt, and they may let a wave of anger sweep over them when wronged, but the enemy of a Leo will always know they are an enemy. As will a friend. Leos are loyal to a fault, sometimes blinding themselves to others' shortcomings. Since they are so straightforward they struggle to understand manipulative people.
Since self-respect is important to Leos they will usually stay their hands and not take steps they might regret or wish they could reconsider later. Leos actually are so averse to negativity that they forgive those who do them wrong very readily. They can be taken advantage of. Thus, to some they may seem like naive suckers for a good sob story, but Leos also never forget --- and, when roused, they can be formidable opponents. There is a reason Leo is the sign of kingship, a Fire Sign ruled by the Sun, and a Fixed Sign (did the Ancients know that the Earth revolved around Leo, er, the Sun?). Leos crave stability. Since they are so fixed, predictable, and dependable, people are comfortable and confident in their presence.
Leos want respect, and they want love. They truly are regal in that respect --- they would rather be loved than feared. This is the most romantic of all the signs, and Leos will go out of their way to provide for a chosen mate or for their friends. They take pride in their pride, whether its made up of family, friends, or co-workers. They are fierce protectors of the people in their circle, and will sacrifice themselves to a large degree to ensure the safety and security of their friends and family.
Leo rules the Fifth House, so Leo is the sign of the Life Force expressing itself, and so it is the sign of procreation (though not sex), children, self-expression, adventure, and creativity. Leo is the sign of love affairs (Leo is, not so coincidentally, the sign of France). They are extremely sensitive --- both to their own feelings and to others' --- and often see things other people miss.
Leos make good artists and innovators. They make good movie directors and managers. Leos like to organize others. Since they are frequently charismatic, most people don't mind them, but a Leo's strengths can turn to weaknesses quickly. They often step into leadership roles whether they have been invited or not, and this can cause resentment. Even when placed in charge, they can turn a Table of Organization inside out in the name of efficiency --- and make things less efficient because of the annoyance people feel. A Leo becoming aware of unhappiness will usually try to soothe ruffled feathers, but can also be curtly dismissive when someone rejects their overtures.
When rebuffed or unappreciated or bored Leo's will despise their work and neglect it. Their extraordinary ability to expend energy means that they often need quiet time to recharge themselves and sort out their experiences, so, much like real lions, they will quietly go back to their dens. Leos have a reputation for laziness that is ill-earned. Like lions they like to take it easy when they can, but when motivated they are very much like lions on the hunt. They will not return home without whatever they have been pursuing.
Leos will frequently back away from situations they perceive as chaotic thereby abandoning people to their fate, but sometimes will work --- too hard --- to bring order to a disrupted situation. Thus, they can get stuck in bad relationships and situations. Sometimes their sense of ego or self-esteem will not let them recognize, much less admit, a situation gone to seed. Leos like to gamble, and not always with money. This can get them into trouble.
Leos need to learn to take the measure of what others need and want, and to recognize whether they themselves can provide it.
