Taurus / J.P. Rhea |
People born under the sign of Taurus are the homebodies of the Zodiac. Taureans often don't like to venture beyond the familiar, but even if they are world travellers they insist on creating a comfort zone or safe space all their own wherever they are.
Taurus is an Earth sign, and a sign of settling down and sinking deep roots. Taurus is also a Feminine (or "Inner") sign, and Tauruses can be motherly, no matter their own sex or gender. Taurus is the sign of acquisition. Taureans like their comforts, and can often be extravagant in providing an environment for themselves. The sign is ruled by Venus, symbol of the goddess of beauty, and itself rules the Second House of materiality, security, finances, and gain and loss.
If you are a member of a Taurus' inner circle you will be secure and protected (assuming that they are reasonably evolved and that their inner circle extends beyond themselves). They can be direct, and often quite earthy. They are usually very loyal, but can be explosive when crossed.
We can see the Zodiac as an ancient, intuitive, and symbolic representation of Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: Having come into existence (Aries) the representational person of the Zodiac must now provide for their own basic needs of food, clothing and shelter (Taurus). The central concept of Taurus is "I Have."
And having, Taureans often do not like to give up: These are people that others often call "bullheaded" even without knowing their sign. They generally have a very strong sense of what is right and what is wrong, but it is all their own. Taureans will fight for their beliefs whether those beliefs are enlightened or benighted. Clinging to ideas or concepts that may have become outmoded, or refusing to see that the circumstances around them are not what they think, a Taurean's stubbornness often gets them into trouble, after which they will thrash around like a bull caught in a ground trap. However, they are stolid and dependable individuals, and will stand their ground fiercely when challenged, so they can form the hard core of support for any new (or old) idea or plan. They can be "bullish" about any belief of which they become convinced.
Taurus is an unusual constellation / sign in that it contains not one but two Behenian astrological stars. Aldebaran (Oculi Tauri or "The Eye of The Bull") rules over riches and honors. The Pleiades ("The Seven Sisters") rule over secrets, over water and over the winds, and are hence the patron stars of sailors, who would not set out for the season until the star cluster rose in the sky.
The Pleiades also rule over the spirits of the dead, one of Taurus' more ancient and esoteric connections. Sumerian mythology states that the son of the Lord of the Underworld appeared on Earth as a bull. It can be assumed that many early men were killed while hunting the now-extinct but gigantic aurochs that the constellation represents and were afterward buried in the ground, Taurus' element. This led the Mesopotamians to connect the sky-bull with the afterlife.
The Pleiades or Seven Sisters. Water nymphs, they were the patrons of sailors. |
The Hyades, "Bringers of The Rain" are water nymphs just like the Pleiades to whom they are related as sisters. |
Famous Taureans include the Buddha Shakyamuni, Shakespeare, President Ulysses S. Grant, Malcolm X, the actresses Audrey Hepburn and Katharine Hepburn, Salvador Dali, and the dictators Lenin and Hitler.
