Our journey through the Zodiac is halfway complete when we reach Virgo, the sixth sign.
Astrologically, the sun is in Virgo from 23 August to 22 September (Tropical) or 17 September to 17 October (Sidereal). In terms of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, after coming into existence (Aries) and providing for basic needs (Taurus), taking stock of the environment (Gemini) and reacting to that environment (Cancer), the Representational Person has acted (Leo) and now steps back to assess the results of that action. The key words for Virgo are "I analyze" or "I scrutinize."

Virgos are detail-oriented, which is meaningful because the very word "detail" is derived from associations with this sign. Virgos want to know *how* things work and *why* they work and then think of ways to make things work better. Virgos make good engineers, chemists, accountants, nurses, lawyers, and judges. They can be great leaders but they work best in and through established systems. Virgos believe in and uphold the existing Social Contract, though the most evolved among them will be the people who tweak the language. Unevolved Virgos can remain ossified as changes sweep over and past them. They are the natural conservatives of the Zodiac. Even if they are in the public sphere, Virgos tend toward personal privacy.

There is a tendency among some astrologers to become fixated on the "virginal" side of this sign, and sometimes Virgos are described as innocents abroad, or prudish, or narrow-minded and fussy, or fearful of change. Of course, Virgo individuals can be those things, but this sign has far more positive associations with effective decisionmaking and active development of effective strategies. The Vestal Virgins were legal professionals after all, not nuns, and Virgos have to be badly-aspected to be the uptight, critical, carping busybodies and "ice queens" they are sometimes portrayed as being. As an Earth Sign, although it would seem that Virgos would be earthbound spirits, Virgo is also a Mutable Sign, and thus subject to change. This flexibility is reinforced by quick Mercury, Virgo's ruler, the planet of communication. Virgo is, unsurprisingly, a Feminine or "Inner" sign.
Virgo rules the Sixth House of organization, order, service, employment, fitness, and health. Virgo is the sign of the interactional areas of life. Virgos have to beware of losing sight of the forest for the trees in some quixotic quest for total perfection.
